Bartonella is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria and is the sole genus within the family Bartonellaceae. These bacteria are notable for their ability to be transmitted to both animals and humans via various vectors, including fleas, lice, and sand flies. Cats can contract Bartonella henselae through bites from infected fleas or exposure to infected blood, making cats that are involved in fights or have received blood transfusions more susceptible to infection. Dogs can harbor Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii, Bartonella henselae, and other Bartonella species.
