Target Information
The foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), part of the Aphthovirus genus in the Picornaviridae family, infects both domestic and wild cloven-hoofed animals. Known for its high contagiousness, FMDV's ability to target a range of hosts and its existence in various types and strains makes controlling the disease challenging, thus severely impacting international livestock trade. Globally, serotypes O and A are most commonly found, but a distinct serotype, Asia 1, was initially identified in India between 1951 and 1952 and later in Pakistan in 1954.
