Target Information
Porcine angiotensinogen (pAGT) is a liver-derived protein that serves as the key substrate for the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), a hormone system that plays a critical role in the regulation of blood pressure and fluid balance in pigs, as well as in humans. pAGT is cleaved by the enzyme renin to produce angiotensin I, which is subsequently converted to the potent vasoconstrictor angiotensin II by the action of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). Angiotensin II is a central mediator in the RAS, affecting blood pressure by constricting blood vessels and promoting the release of the hormone aldosterone, which increases sodium and water retention in the kidneys. Additionally, it plays a role in cell growth, inflammation, and fibrosis.
