Target Information
Hemoglobin is a complex molecule composed of four subunits: two alpha globin chains and two beta globin chains. Each globin chain is bound to a heme group, which contains an iron atom at its center. The iron atom is what allows hemoglobin to bind to oxygen. Hemoglobin, beta is encoded by the HBB gene in sheep. Hb is the protein contained in red blood cells that is responsible for delivery of oxygen to the tissues. It is found in almost all vertebrates.
