Target Information

Substance P (SP) is a neurotransmitter involved in the processing of noxious information to the brain. It is an undecapeptide, which means it consists of a chain of 11 amino acid residues. It belongs to the tachykinin family of neuropeptides. SP acts as both a neurotransmitter and a neuromodulator. It is released from the terminals of specific sensory nerves. SP is found in the brain, spinal cord, and is associated with inflammatory processes and pain. SP appears to be an appropriate biomarker of nociception in cattle.
