Sheep have high economic value as they can be used to produce meat, milk, fiber, and other by-products. In addition, due to their suitable size, short gestation period, and abundant milk production, sheep have become an important model animal in agriculture, pharmaceutical, and biomedical research. In order to obtain excellent sheep breeds with high meat and milk yields, high-quality wool, and high disease resistance, various methods have been used to select sheep breeds. The traditional breeding method is to retain individuals with superior traits through phenotypic selection, but the breeding process is very slow and complex. With the advancement of genetic engineering and modern molecular biology, new varieties of sheep can be bred by modifying or editing genes. Compared with traditional breeding methods, modern molecular breeding methods have greatly improved in predictability and efficiency.
