Background of Animal Transgenesis

A transgenic animal is one in which a gene or DNA sequence (“transgene”) transferred through human intervention has been integrated into the genome of the cell. A transgenic animal is now defined as an animal that has stably integrated a transgene into its germline and is capable of passing the transgene on to its offspring. The production of transgenes provides a means of rapidly introducing "new" or modified genes and DNA sequences into animals without hybridization or crossbreeding. This is a more precise technique of animal breeding, but the results are not fundamentally different from genetic selection or crossbreeding.
