Target Information
Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is a hormone released from the right atrium in reaction to atrial stretch caused by increased blood volume and high blood pressure. ANP lowers blood pressure by causing vasodilation (widening of blood vessels). It also promotes natriuresis (sodium excretion) and diuresis (water excretion) by the kidneys, reducing blood volume. ANP helps to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance in the body. It induces dose-dependent relaxation in isolated guinea pig tracheal chains that have been contracted by histamine, serotonin, carbachol, and arachidonic acid.
