Target Information
Prolactin (PRL), which is also referred to as lactotropin and mammotropin, is a protein primarily recognized for its crucial role in allowing mammals to produce milk. It plays a part in more than 300 distinct processes across various vertebrate species. Research in hamsters has shown that the variations in circulating levels of PRL and growth hormone (GH) proteins during the estrous cycle and pregnancy are mainly due to factors other than changes in mRNA levels. While prolactin's fundamental functions are conserved, its role in hamsters is particularly significant in the context of photoperiodism and its impact on reproductive physiology.
