Target Information
Methylglyoxal (MGO) is a reactive organic compound that is produced as a byproduct of glycolysis. The reaction of methylglyoxal with bovine gamma II-crystallin, which is found primarily in the lens nucleus, could alter the molecular surface network, resulting in aggregation, increased light scattering, and thus cataract. MGO is implicated in the biology of diabetes. It is industrially produced by degrading carbohydrates using overexpressed methylglyoxal synthase.
