Target Information
In rabbits, albumin is encoded by the ALB gene. This protein binds to water, Ca2+, Na+, K+, fatty acids, hormones, bilirubin, and drugs. Its primary role is to regulate the colloidal osmotic pressure of blood. Additionally, it serves as a major zinc transporter in plasma, typically binding about 80% of all plasma zinc. Rabbit serum albumin is commonly used in research, particularly in immunological assays and studies of drug binding and transport. Because of its role in maintaining osmotic pressure, albumin may be important in studies of cardiovascular function in rabbits.
