Target Information
Von Willebrand factor (VWF) is a blood glycoprotein essential for primary hemostasis, particularly facilitating platelet adhesion. It serves as a carrier protein for Factor VIII and enhances both platelet adhesion and aggregation. vWF acts as a bridge between platelets and the damaged blood vessel wall. It binds to collagen in the subendothelial matrix and to glycoprotein Ib/IX/V receptors on platelets, facilitating platelet adhesion. In rabbits, the Von Willebrand factor is encoded by the VWF gene. vWF's role in platelet adhesion makes it relevant in studies of thrombosis (blood clot formation). Rabbit models can be used to investigate the mechanisms of thrombus formation and the effects of anti-thrombotic drugs.
