Acetylcarnitine, also known as acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR), is a naturally occurring compound that plays essential roles in cellular metabolism. It consists of an acetyl group attached to the carnitine molecule. It is an acetylated form of L-carnitine. It is involved in the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria for breakdown and is used to treat various conditions. It also crosses the blood-brain barrier and may have neuroprotective effects.
