Target Information
Argininosuccinate synthase (ASS), also known as argininosuccinate synthetase, is an enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of argininosuccinate from citrulline and aspartate. ASS is responsible for the third step of the urea cycle. It plays a crucial role in converting neurotoxic ammonia, produced during protein catabolism, into innocuous urea in the liver of ureotelic animals. Bovine Argininosuccinate Synthase is encoded by the ASS1 gene in cattle. Its upregulation can contribute to epithelial proliferation necessary to be sustained during oncogenic transformation and regeneration.
