Arginine is an amino acid which features a guanidino group appended to a standard amino acid framework. It is necessary for the production of nitric oxide (NO), a signaling molecule that regulates blood flow, mitochondrial function, and cellular communication. It is essential for the development of T-cells, which play a central role in immune response. Arginine serves as a precursor to other amino acids, including glutamate, proline, and creatine. It plays a central role in nitrogen metabolism (e.g. synthesis of protein, nitric oxide, polyamines and creatine), blood flow, nutrient utilisation and health in ruminants.
