Target Information
Defensin is encoded by the DEFb2 gene in horses. Beta-defensin 2, an antibiotic peptide, is locally regulated by inflammation. The mature defensins exhibit antimicrobial activity against a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses. Research has shown that equine β-defensins are organized similarly to other mammals and exhibit typical genomic clustering. Both DEFB2 and DEFB3 are duplicates of DEFB1.
