Target Information
5-Hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), the primary metabolite of serotonin (5-HT), plays a crucial role in chemical analysis of urine samples to determine serotonin levels in the body. Clinically, it is most frequently tested for the diagnosis of carcinoid tumors arising from the enterochromaffin (Kultschitzsky) cells of the small intestine, which release substantial amounts of serotonin. Interestingly, in salmon, the 5-HT system exhibits greater responsiveness to stress in late-emerging individuals, as evidenced by higher hindbrain 5-HIAA levels following confinement stress compared to early-emerging fish.
