Target Information

Acetylcholinesterase, commonly referred to as AChE, AChase, or acetylhydrolase, is the main cholinesterase enzyme in the body. It facilitates the breakdown of acetylcholine and other choline esters that serve as neurotransmitters. In fish species, AChE is found in the brain and muscles. The inhibition of AChE is frequently monitored in both terrestrial and freshwater aquatic environments as a marker for exposure to and the effects of organophosphorus insecticides. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is primarily responsible for regulating neural signaling in fish and its activity is extremely sensitive to environmental pollutants. Therefore, AChE is often used as an important biomarker for assessing fish health and environmental pollution.
