Target Information

Fatty acids, derived from the breakdown of triglycerides and other lipids, undergo a process called β-oxidation. This catabolic pathway occurs in the cytosol of prokaryotes and the mitochondria of eukaryotes, resulting in the generation of acetyl-CoA. The name "β-oxidation" stems from the fact that the beta carbon within the fatty acid chain undergoes oxidation, leading to the formation of a carbonyl group, which then initiates the cycle anew. During β-oxidation, long-chain fatty acids are progressively broken down into smaller fatty acyl-CoA chains. The resulting acetyl-CoA enters the citric acid cycle, contributing to energy production. Additionally, the co-enzymes NADH and FADH2 generated during this process play essential roles in the electron transport chain.
