Target Information
Neutrophil collagenase, also known as MMP-8, is an enzyme that belongs to the peptidase family M10. MMPs, including MMP-8, play a role in protein degradation and peptide bond hydrolysis. Although genetically distinct, all MMPs are structurally related. MMP-8 specifically degrades collagen types I, II, III, VII, and X, with a degradation preference in the order: I> III> II. Because MMP's play a role in the breakdown of the extracellular matrix, they are very important in wound healing. Guinea pigs can be used in wound healing studies, and MMP8's role in collagen degradation and tissue remodeling is investigated.
