Specifications
Target Information
Type II collagen, the primary matrix protein found in articular cartilage, is initially produced as a procollagen that includes propeptides at both its C-terminal and N-terminal ends, known as PIICP and PIINP respectively. The N-terminal propeptide of type II collagen (PIINP) serves as a biomarker indicative of cartilage formation. Elevated PIINP levels can indicate increased bone formation, which is relevant in conditions like growth, fracture healing, and osteoporosis. Guinea pigs can be used in studies examining bone metabolism and skeletal disorders. PIINP can serve as a marker of bone formation and turnover in these models.
