Target Information
Lipopolysaccharide, commonly referred to as endotoxin, encompasses the components of the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria, like E. coli and Salmonella. LPS is a potent activator of the innate immune system. It binds to Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) on immune cells, triggering a cascade of signaling events. This leads to the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. Studies have demonstrated that intradermal administration of Escherichia coli-derived LPS to the auricle skin of hamsters does not affect sebaceous gland morphology or sebum accumulation. However, it does induce an increase in epidermal thickness.
