Target Information
Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) is a class of chemical compounds derived from phosphatidylcholines. It is produced within cells mainly by the enzyme phospholipase A2, which removes one of the fatty acid groups from phosphatidylcholine to produce LPC. LPC activates endothelial cells during early atherosclerosis. Apoptotic cells release LPC as a find-me signal to recruit phagocytes (which then engulf the apoptotic cells). LPCs are quickly metabolized in vivo by enzymes like lysophospholipase and LPC-acyltransferase.
