Target Information
Canine ribonuclease inhibitor (RI) is a cytosolic protein that plays a critical role in binding and inactivating pancreatic-type ribonucleases, thereby protecting cells from the cytotoxic effects of these enzymes. It is a 50-kDa protein composed of 15 leucine-rich repeats that form a characteristic horseshoe shape. RI's primary function is to bind with high affinity to ribonucleases such as RNase1 (RNase A), RNase2, RNase4, and RNase5, inhibiting their activity and preventing potential cellular damage. The cytotoxicity of different ribonucleases correlates inversely with their affinity toward RI, implying that only ribonucleases that evade RI may be cytotoxic and fatal to the cell. This protein is also implicated in regulating angiogenin-mediated neovascularization and responding to oxidative stress, highlighting its multifaceted role in canine cellular health and disease prevention.
