Target Information

Haptoglobin is a protein produced by the liver. Its primary function is to find and attach itself to free hemoglobin in the blood. Haptoglobin is encoded by the HP gene in sheep. It belongs to the group of plasma proteins of hepatic origin, collectively known as acute-phase proteins. In a previous study, three ewes that died after cesarean section had significantly elevated serum haptoglobin concentrations prior to surgery, indicating an inflammatory response.
