Target Information
Calpastatin is encoded by the CAST gene in pigs. Calpastatin is a specific, physiological inhibitor of the m- and m-calpain proteases responsible for early postmortem muscle proteolysis. It specifically binds to calpain and regulates its activity. It plays a crucial role in proteolysis, including the proteolysis of the amyloid precursor protein. The calpain-calpastatin system plays an important role in normal skeletal muscle growth during the postnatal period.
