Target Information

Gastric inhibitory Polypeptide is encoded by the GIP gene in pigs. GIP, also known as glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide or glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide, serves as a weak inhibitor of gastric acid secretion. Its primary role, as an incretin, is to stimulate insulin secretion. Alongside glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), GIP belongs to a class of molecules known as incretins, which enhance insulin release upon oral food intake. It was first isolated from porcine small intestine in 1973 for its ability to inhibit gastric hydrochloric acid secretion. GIP is a weak inhibitor of acid secretion and a potent stimulator of postprandial insulin.
