Target Information

Leptin is a hormone secreted by adipocytes whose primary role is to regulate appetite and energy metabolism. Studies have shown that Leptin suppresses appetite and reduces feed intake by acting on receptors in the hypothalamus. In pigs, the level of Leptin is closely related to body fat content and energy status. When body fat increases, the level of Leptin rises, thus suppressing feeding and increasing energy expenditure. Leptin, also known as obesity factor, is encoded by the LEP gene in pigs. It has been identified as a promising candidate gene associated with the Intramuscular fat content in pigs. Leptin has multiple biological functions in pigs, including regulation of appetite, energy metabolism, growth, fat deposition, reproduction, and immune responses.
