Target Information
Myelin basic protein (MBP) is a crucial component of the myelin sheath, a fatty insulating layer surrounding the axons of neurons in the central nervous system (CNS). MBP belongs to a family of proteins called small, hydrophobic proteins. It is primarily found in the compact myelin, the innermost and most crucial layer of the myelin sheath. Myelin basic protein is encoded by the MBP gene in pigs. It is an antigenic fatty-acid-binding protein that can induce experimental autoimmune neuritis.
