Target Information
Erythropoietin is a hormone that regulates the proliferation and differentiation of erythrocytes and maintains a physiological level of circulating erythrocyte mass. It binds to the EPOR, causing receptor dimerization and JAK2 activation, which in turn activates specific downstream effectors such as STAT1 and STAT3. In rabbits, the EPO gene encodes this hormone. The function of EPO in rabbits is not limited to the promotion of erythropoiesis, but also includes protection of the heart from ischemic injury by activating survival pathways in cardiomyocytes and fibroblasts.
