Target Information
In rabbits, the HP gene encodes haptoglobin. During hemolysis, hemoglobin can accumulate in the kidneys and be excreted in urine. Haptoglobin binds with free plasma hemoglobin, facilitating the hepatic recycling of heme iron and preventing kidney damage. Additionally, haptoglobin functions as an antioxidant, exhibits antibacterial properties, and plays a role in modulating various aspects of the acute phase response. Haptoglobin in rabbits acts mainly through mechanisms such as binding and scavenging hemoglobin, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and protection of nerve cells.
