Target Information
Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor 1, encoded by the SERPINE1 gene in rabbits, is a serine protease inhibitor (serpin) that primarily inhibits tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase (uPA), which are responsible for activating plasminogen and subsequently facilitating fibrinolysis, the natural process of breaking down blood clots. Elevated levels of PAI-1 pose a risk for thrombosis and atherosclerosis. In the rabbit model, studies of PAI-1 have focused on its effects on thrombosis and the fibrinolytic system. For example, elevated levels of PAI-1 lead to an increased propensity for thrombosis, while lower levels may reduce thrombosis.
