Target Information
Metalloproteinase inhibitor 3 binds to metalloproteinases, such as collagenases, and irreversibly deactivates them by targeting their catalytic zinc cofactor. It may play a role in a tissue-specific acute response to remodeling stimuli. In rabbits, this inhibitor is encoded by the TIMP3 gene. TIMP3 has a variety of biological functions in rabbits and other mammals, including extracellular matrix regulation, neuroprotection, cardioprotection, anti-inflammation, vasculoprotection, muscle regeneration, nephroprotection, and potential antitumor effects. These functions suggest an important role for TIMP3 in maintaining tissue homeostasis and responding to pathological conditions.
