Target Information

Calmodulin (CaM) is a multifunctional calcium-binding second messenger protein expressed in all eukaryotic cells. It is an intracellular target of the secondary messenger Ca2+, and Ca2+ binding is required for calmodulin activation. In a canine model, the ability of exogenously added calmodulin to stimulate the rate of ATP-dependent Ca2+ transport across vascular smooth muscle plasma membranes suggests that calmodulin may play a role in reducing the cytoplasmic concentration of ionised calcium during vasodilation.
