Target Information
Swine epididymal secretory glutathione peroxidase (GPX5), also known as phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase, is an important antioxidant enzyme in the epididymis of pigs. GPX5 is primarily involved in protecting sperm cells from oxidative damage by reducing phospholipid hydroperoxides to alcohols, thereby maintaining the integrity of sperm cell membranes. This protein plays a crucial role in sperm maturation and function, as oxidative stress can impair sperm motility and fertility. In pigs, GPX5 contributes to the overall reproductive health and the success of fertilization by ensuring the sperm's ability to swim and penetrate the egg. It has been identified as a marker for boar sperm quality, with higher amounts in seminal plasma correlating with lower sperm quality parameters such as membrane integrity and motility.
