Target Information
Canine erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone that plays a vital role in stimulating erythropoiesis, particularly in response to anemia. It is produced mainly by the peritubular capillary endothelium of the kidney in response to reduced oxygen tension (hypoxia) and acts primarily in the bone marrow. EPO stimulates the growth and differentiation of erythroid and platelet progenitors, induces hemoglobin synthesis in dividing erythrocyte precursors, and can lead to increased hematocrit and red blood cell counts.
