Target Information
In felines, beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a small globular protein and a key component of MHC class I molecules. It is expressed on nearly all nucleated cells and helps present intracellular peptides to cytotoxic T cells, aiding the immune system in identifying and eliminating infected or cancerous cells. B2M also regulates cytokine activity, such as enhancing the effects of TNF. Clinically, B2M is an important biomarker for kidney function, with elevated levels in urine indicating renal tubular damage. Blood levels of B2M may also rise in tumors, infections, or autoimmune diseases.
