Target Information
Bovine mucin-1 (MUC1) is a high molecular weight, heavily O-glycosylated transmembrane mucin that is expressed by various epithelial cells throughout the body. It plays a crucial role in the protection of mucosal surfaces and contributes to the formation of the mucus barrier. In the Bovine species, Mucin-1 is synthesized by mammary epithelial cells and is shed into milk as a part of the milk fat globule membrane. It is thought to have a role in innate immune defense, potentially by binding bacteria and preventing their attachment to epithelial surfaces, thereby contributing to the first line of defense against bacterial invasion of epithelial surfaces, particularly in the mammary glands and the neonatal gut.
