Target Information
In felines, beta-glucuronidase (GUSB) is a lysosomal enzyme that degrades glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) containing glucuronic acid, such as chondroitin sulfate, heparan sulfate, and dermatan sulfate. It maintains cellular metabolic balance by removing terminal glucuronic acid residues. Defects in GUSB function cause mucopolysaccharidosis type VII (MPS VII), a rare genetic disorder characterized by lysosomal accumulation of GAGs and tissue/organ enlargement. Additionally, GUSB is used as a reporter gene in molecular biology to monitor gene expression.
