Target Information
Feline type I iodothyronine deiodinase (DIO1) is a key enzyme involved in thyroid hormone metabolism. It catalyzes the conversion of thyroxine (T4) to the active hormone triiodothyronine (T3) by removing an iodine atom from the outer ring. This process is essential for maintaining systemic thyroid hormone levels, as DIO1 provides most of the circulating T3, which is crucial for growth, differentiation, and metabolism. In cats, DIO1 is primarily found in the liver and kidneys, where it regulates T3 production and helps maintain homeostasis. Additionally, DIO1 can inactivate thyroid hormones by removing iodine from the inner ring, converting T4 to reverse T3 (rT3) and T3 to diiodothyronine (T2).
