The hemagglutinin (HA) protein, which is a homotrimeric glycoprotein found on the surface of influenza viruses, plays a crucial role in the virus's ability to infect hosts. The HA1 subunit, which contains a receptor binding site, facilitates the virus's attachment to specific sialyl sugar chains on the host cell surface.
