Target Information
In 1997, the H5N1 avian influenza A virus in Hong Kong crossed the species barrier, infecting humans directly from poultry. Neuraminidase (NA) is a tetrameric type II transmembrane glycoprotein located on the envelope of influenza viruses. Its primary function is to cleave terminal sialic acid residues from carbohydrate chains on the cell surface and viral envelope, facilitating the release of newly formed virions from host cells.
