Target Information
Bactericidal permeability-increasing protein (BPI) is a protein that is part of the innate immune system. It belongs to the family of lipid-binding serum glycoproteins. BPI was initially identified in neutrophils, but is found in other tissues including the epithelial lining of mucous membranes. Bovine Bactericidal Permeability-Increasing Protein is encoded by the BPI gene in cattle. It is a potent neutralizer of the highly pro-inflammatory molecule bacterial LPS and has antimicrobial activity against a variety of Gram-negative bacteria.
