Target Information
Gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP), also known as glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide or glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide, serves as a weak inhibitor of gastric acid secretion. Its primary role, as an incretin, is to stimulate insulin secretion. Alongside glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), GIP belongs to a class of molecules known as incretins, which enhance insulin release upon oral food intake. It is encoded by the GIP gene in cattle. It is a hormone secreted by the gastrointestinal tract in response to nutrient absorption, exerts anabolic effects on adipose tissue in some species.
