Target Information
Bovine Melanocyte Protein PMEL is encoded by the PMEL gene in cattle. This protein is first translocated to endoplasmic reticulum and then undergoes multiple modifications to form amyloid fibrils. PMEL plays a central role in melanosome morphogenesis and pigmentation. PMEL may prevent pigmentation-associated toxicity by sequestering toxic reaction intermediates of the eumelanin biosynthesis pathway. It was reported that decrease of eumelanin ratio caused by the PMEL polymorphism might dilute coat color of Kumamoto sub-breed.
