Target Information
A prion is a misfolded protein that can induce misfolding of normal variants of the same protein and trigger cellular death. Prions can misfold sporadically, due to genetic mutations, or by exposure to an already misfolded protein. Bovine Major Prion Protein is encoded by the PRNP gene in cattle. Research has found a tentative association between PRNP promoter polymorphisms and bovine spongiform encephalopathy susceptibility in German cattle.
