It belongs to a group of proteins called extractable nuclear antigens (ENAs), which are used as diagnostic markers in autoimmune diseases. Smith antigen is a protein associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease. It is targeted by autoantibodies known as anti-Smith antibodies, which are used as diagnostic markers for SLE due to their specificity for the disease.
