Target Information
Ubiquitin is a small regulatory protein present in most tissues of eukaryotic organisms. Its adaptability makes ubiquitin a crucial component in cellular regulation and maintaining homeostasis. The process of ubiquitylation consists of three primary steps: activation, conjugation, and ligation, which are facilitated by ubiquitin-activating enzymes (E1s), ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes (E2s), and ubiquitin ligases (E3s) respectively. Among the most well-known functions of ubiquitination is the degradation of proteins. Ubiquitin also plays a role in inducing lymphocyte differentiation and was originally discovered in the bovine thymus during the isolation of the thymic polypeptide hormone, thymopoietin.
