Target Information
Histamine is an organic nitrogenous compound involved in local immune responses, communication, as well as regulating physiological functions in the gut and acting as a neurotransmitter for the brain, spinal cord, and uterus. It is produced in the brainstem's raphe nuclei, enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract, and other tissues. Brain histamine is of great importance in determining feeding behavior. Some peripheral eosinophils in cats contain histamine and can release histamine by appropriate stimulation.
