Target Information
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), also known as adrenocorticotropin or corticotropin, is a polypeptide tropic hormone which is produced by the pituitary gland. Its primary function is to stimulate the production and release of cortisol from the adrenal cortex. Spontaneous hyperadrenocorticism in dogs is known to be the result of excessive secretion of ACTH by the pituitary gland or excessive autonomous glucocorticoid secretion by an adrenocortical tumor.
